Excellence is rarely talked about these days. It is understandable. Excellence was a buzz word in the days of excess. Most leaders I have observed today are mainly focused on survival and/or repositioning for when the market turns.

Here me on this: I don’t think the market will turn like it has in the past. The market has been altered. It is a brand new world. A world that will force all of us to adjust differently.

Don’t believe me? Has bank credit been altered? How about government control? Have investments like real estate been altered? Yes, yes, and yes.

Now wait a minute… this blog is about excellence and I am talking about the altered state of the marketplace. There is one thing that has not been altered – being excellent. It may simply be harder to do so now unless you utilize this formula:

Excellence is a company’s or employee’s performance versus their potential.

You can still achieve excellence. All of us like to focus on performance. Yet, it may be vital at this point to reevaluate potential. You may feel like your potential is a lot lower today than it was in the past. If so, I would challenge you to simply get real and write out your potential in 6 months, in 12 months, and then in the next two years. When you get real with your potential you will have a clearer path to excellence.
